No Adderall in NYC

I have a prescription for Adderall (brand) 10mg tablets and I can not find a pharmacy in NYC or its suburbs that has it in stock. Any ideas?

After reading this article, this article I tried several independent pharmacies but the most I could find was 8 tablets at one place. My script is for 60.

I have tried every national chain pharmacy store, and they are all out. Many are out of the generic as well. I can't take the generic as I get a side effect from it.

Anyone know of a pharmacy that has it in stock?

Any idea why there is no press coverage?

Also, one pharmacist told me that the shortage "is an issue that has been going on since the Spring" and I was like, "Yeah, not really, I have had every prescription since the Spring filled without a problem and now I have literally called 30 + pharmacies and can not find one with it in stock."

I have already left a message on my doctor's voice mail and will follow-up in the morning.

There actually has been press about a national shortage of Adderall.

I don't have an answer for you regarding where to get it.

Response by poster: There has been no press as of October 23, 2011 on the current unavailability of it in NYC.

Any chance you could go through a mail-order pharmacy like Medco? Not sure if it's too late to switch with a written script for a local pharmacy.

After facing the same problem, my bf switched to the XR (extended-release) version when he couldn't find IR (instant-release) near us. He had to take his prescription back to his doctor to have it re-written.

Response by poster: Thanks, lalex, I was just checking to see if they are still open, going to try them tomorrow for sure.

If you can get a new script from your doctor, you could get dexedrine instead. It's basically the same thing; Adderall is just four salts of amphetamine. I wouldn't be surprised if the Adderall shortage has overflowed into dexedrine too, though.

FWIW I did some Googling about this subject since my CVS here in Oklahoma said that they're now out and won't get any until January 2012 (!!). I saw a link that said CVS Caremark (a separate partner of some kind) had it... so maybe there's some merit to going the mail order route.

Yeah, Caremark has a separate supply chain than the CVS retail stores. CVS purchased them about a year and a half back.

I know you said you're allergic to generics, but different pharmacies use different generics, and not all generics use the same fillers/dyes. It might be worth trying to find which generic you were allergic to, and searching for pharmacies with generics from a different manufacturer.

Also, it may be helpful to work with your doctor and surrounding pharmacies. If a pharmacy is out of 10mg but has 20mg, you could work with your doctor to get a script for thirty 20mg, and split them in half.

I take Methlyn and I have had much, much better luck with mom-and-pop pharmacies than the big ones, for some reason. There seems to always be a shortage at the big ones, and random "oh, give us three days" that never pan out. Mom and pops have it in two days, no sweat.

You might also want to try phoning the manufacturer, they may know which pharmacies have it in stock.

My google-fu couldn't find the manufacturer, or I would have linked it; but I did find the FDA drug shortage list, which doesn't list IR (only XR), but does contain helpful information on what to do if a medication you need is on the list

Is there any way a compounding pharmacy could help?

Which generic do you get side effects from?
I've seen the some orange sugar-y ones that crumble easily, the really pretty bright blue ones, and the hard orange ones. All of them have different tastes and I assume bases.
(I can send you my pharmacy if you memail me)

Does your insurance have a mail-order/online pharmacy?

Try Northside Pharmacy on Bedford and 6th in Williamsburg, Lorven Pharmacy on Manhattan and Greene in Greenpoint, and Chopin Pharmacy on Manhattan Ave in Greenpoint.

one more thing to try is drugstore.com. they may have it in stock and will ship it to you (you have to mail in your script to them).
