What's this riff?

Can you help me identify this guitar riff? I have a feeling it might be Roy Harper, but I can't find the track (and I haven't heard it for 30 years...)

It's a great, simple riff, and one of the first things I ever learned to play. Open D (000232) then slide that three-finger chord shape up five frets to G, then down a couple of frets to F, then back to open D.

The strum is: [D] Chang! Chack-ka-chang! / [G] Chack-ka-chang! / [F] Chack-ka-chang! / [D] Chack-ka-chang!

Anybody? Thanks!

Not sure it's your riff exactly, but variations on this shape are classic Townshend/Who - It's used a lot in "Tommy" and "Rael" for example.

Don't have a guitar in had to try it, though

Yeah, very Townshendesque. Something from Quadrophenia, I bet.

Let me meditate on it a bit.

Quadrophenia - "Sea and Sand" has a choppy 1-4-3 progression at the end, but it's A-D-C, not D-G-F. Could that be what you're thinking of?

Response by poster: It certainly is a Townshend-type riff, but it isn't The Who, I'm sure of that. Thanks for the suggestions.

Okay, this is driving me crazy, because I know it. I'm sure I own it. I'm thinking seventies, possibly prog-band, or maybe Jethro Tull... might be one of the Yes/Genesis type acoustic things or possibly, as you say, someone like Harper... that era, I'm sure. This is going to kill me because I just played your riff and I KNOW IT. God damn. I will think on this some more. I sure hope someone puts us out of our misery if I can't bring it to mind.

Response by poster: Hi Decani, you're in the right area... Back then, I was listening to lots of Tull and Genesis (but I'm sure it's not either of those bands). Just going to have to listen to lots of prog till we crack it :-)

Best answer: Got it! Well, I've got the one I'm thinking of!

Supertramp: Give a Little Bit.

Specifically, here:

As you see, it's not exactly as you wrote it down, but it's those chords and that's what your description put me in mind of.

Response by poster: Could be! I can't listen at work, but I'll report back as soon as I can :-)
Thanks

Response by poster: Decani, you're astonishing. That is the song, and that's the riff. I remembered it so hazily (I would have been very hazy when I heard it, of course) and I had the key sig entirely wrong, but you recognised it. Quite amazing. Thanks :-D

Glad it was the right one, because it gave me half an hour of hair-tearing yesterday. :-)
