What is Fark doing with my Flickr photo?

What is Fark doing with my photo? I posted this photo today on Flickr and it is suddenly getting hundreds of hits from Fark. I've been a member of Metafilter for years and have heard of Fark but never visited. Are they photoshopping it?

I take a lot of pretty cool spider photos like that too. People usually pass them around to freak out the arachnophobes.

it's probably a photoshop contest - someone suggests an image and members do humorous or interesting 'shops, and vote on favorites. They're not really supposed to do it by hotlinking, I don't think.

I don't know if it's related but on reddit or MeFi this week there was a post where some newspaper (Daily Mail?) had written about a tv special (some British cooking thing I think) where in the intro, there were a few frames of a very *ahem* male squirrel on a lawn. So maybe squirrel bollocks are a hot photoshop topic this week?

Response by poster: That's pretty much what i thought. It just seemed strange they would suddenly snatch one of my pictures out of the ether. I'll check out your photos Sanka.

Oh nevermind, the fark photo link had the nutty squirrel; yours was the spider. I imagine something similar happened and photo contest ensued as has been suggested.

Best answer: Just engaged my husband, who has a Total Fark account to investigate. Here are the results:

Not a PhotoShop contest.
The joke appears to begin in a thread which links to this Flicker photo (NSFW) and the thread is titled "Check out the flagship picture from yesterday's photoshoot semi Not safe for work." The second or third comment says "Well, that's nice. Honestly, I was expecting a picture of a spider."

Then a couple of threads above (which is later, I think), there's a link to your pic that says "The highlight of this afternoon's photoshoot. I'm pretty pleased, but what do you all think? (This one SFW)." Since I don't speak Farkian, I asked my husband about it, and he said that lots of Farkers hate spiders, and so many Farkers just got...well...Cat Faced Spider rolled.

Unless things have changed at Fark since I let my TotalFark membership lapse a couple years ago, you can join TotalFark for 5 bucks per month and check out the posts from the general time period that you started getting the hits. They're posted by date in chronological order and grouped into 1 hour periods on TF.

If you want the hits to stop too, just change the file name.

OH GOD.

I'm one of those Farkers that gets wigged out by spiders. Y'might want to put a [spiderfilter] on that thing.

*shudder*

And yes, Farkers do that crap. So do 4channers, but that's another matter entirely.

I'm not afraid of spiders, yet, that is one of the most terrifying things I have ever seen!
