Help me find music like what I've heard at Ottawa's Heart and Crown pub.

So, I was recently at an appointment where I heard some Irish or Scottish music and it reminded me of my younger days going to the pub called Heart and Crown. I remember them playing Celtic (I think) music which was really uplifting and fun to dance around to. Can anyone recommend music like this that I could purchase? I know that they used to also play music like Great Big Sea, so music like them is also appreciated. Thank you! :D

Best answer: Here's two rock-ish Celtic bands, they're usually pretty upbeat. I have more at home, I'll check.

Enter the Haggis
Mudmen

Oh wait also off the top of my head is Ashley MacIsaac (Maritime fiddle), and The Rankin Family (a bit country-ish but with a strong Celtic influence).

All four of these are just the random youtube video based on a search, there might be other songs you like of theirs.

Hi DorothySmith,

Try the following bands for the kind of music the H&C tends to play most of the time:

The Dubliners
Evans and Doherty
The Irish Rovers
The Irish Descendants

In the same vein, but a bit more modern and upbeat would be bands like Rawlins Cross, the Cotters, The Leahys and others.

Good luck!

A great source for local Ottawa Irish music events is the Irish Music Ottawa info page and blog run by Craig Hamm. Note that there are local sessions going on almost every night around town. The Thursday night O'Connells one is particularly good.

Response by poster: Thanks Lemurrhea! I really like Enter the Haggis so far! The song you sent me makes me want to jig around my living room!

Thank you LN, I will definitely check them out!

Bonehead, thank you! I did my undergrad in Ottawa but am now living in Southern Ontario so I don't have easy access to anything in Ottawa any longer, but I will keep it in mind if I travel in the future!

Dorothy, you might sill be interested in The Gaelic Hour, a local radio show on Irish music and culture. It's streamed and has a podcast too.

If you like Great Big Sea and Enter the Haggis, check out Flogging Molly in the rock-type vein.

Along more trad lines, off the top of my head, I love Solas, the Battlefield Band, the Tannahill Weavers, Andy M. Stewart and Jim Malcolm.

Dorothy, Craig's blog/website also has a number of resources in the St. Lawrence corridor, including Montreal, Ottawa, Brockville, Peterborough and Toronto. Do check it out, he might list something near you! :)

For a little attitude with your Irish, I can recommend The Mahones. I haven't listened to them in years but can remember (hazily, for some strange reason!) a few great nights kicking up my heels to their sound.
