All-girl flat-track full contact Excel spreadsheet

How should I manage the roster of my Roller Derby league? Right now I have about 30 girls listed in an Excel spreadsheet with various information, but the info that I'm collecting is growing all the time and I'm not really used to using Excel, there has to be a better way. We're also likely to expand very quickly, possibly doubling our numbers in the next month or so.

I'd really like a system that I can enter everyone's schedule into so that I can know who to expect at which practices. We have 5 practices available a week, two of which are local and I expect a huge turnout at and the other three are a trek. I would like to keep track of how many practices the girls are attending, and have some way of keeping a record of their skills & improvement. There's lots of various types of information to keep on each girl, from whether she owns skates yet to what other skills she can offer the league (webdeisgn, uniform design, promotion, connections, etc.) to whether she can offer other girls rides to practice, etc. Right now it's really hard to keep track of everything in my head and I want to get it into a system.

This is the sort of thing that databases exist for. If you have a copy of Access, I'd try to learn it.

If you don't have time for that, then just keep doing what you're doing. But what you want is a little complicated for that, as you've already recognized.

Since it seems like there is a varying skill set amongst your league, maybe someone in there has some database experience and could help you get started.

You could build something customized in Filemaker, which is what I'd do. (It's a high-maintenance build, but worthwhile, because it'll do everything exactly as you want it.)

Plus you could backsort the information, with a layout that sorts everything by participant, one that gives you info via calendar, and the like. But you might need help to get that started.

Also, my god, I need a roller derby team.

My pal is on the Grave Danger team of the Rat City Rollergirls league here in Seattle, and she's a software programmer. Maybe that's just because this is Seattle, but I bet you have someone on your team who knows how to set up an Access DB.

They have a forum at http://www.ratcityrollergirls.com/bb/, maybe you could ask there what they do.

I've been a supporter of the Carolina Rollergirls for a while now, and recall a couple of them telling me there are mailing lists where teams from across the country share messages, strategies, problems, etc. Might be worth emailing to see how other teams are handling that kind of info.

Response by poster: I'm definitely on those organizing yahoo groups. I just thought I'd consult with you all as well.
