How do I connect a wireless guitar to a Xbox 360?

Ridiculously basic question, I know.

We have an Xbox 360. I bought my kids a 'value pack' of two Xbox 360 guitar controllers and a game (Warriors of Rock).

I followed the instructions: attached the headstock, installed the batteries, turned on the console, pressed the connect button on the console, turned on the guitar controller, pressed and held the connect button on the back of the guitar. Lights flashed. All seemed okay.

Trying to play the game is a different kettle of fish. When it was fired up, the screen insisted that we needed to connect microphones or a headset. I went out and bought microphones, all the while thinking, "why do we need microphones for guitars???". But I was frustrated, so I bought them. The microphones work fine (which would be okay if my kids weren't home sick with sore throats and can't sing, which is why I bought the bloody guitars in the first place).

Googling brings up results for older models which have/don't have the same buttons and whatnot. We've turned the console on and off. We've removed the batteries and started from scratch.

What am I doing wrong?

Best answer: Were you able to use the guitar to navigate the menus and start the game?
If you tried using the standard controller to start the game, that may be why it was asking for a headset or microphone. The standard controller is only used when playing as a vocalist (hence the need for a mic or headset), while you should only need to have a guitar controller connected to play as a guitarist.

Best answer: Durhey's got it. The guitars are actually full-fledged controllers, the only real difference being the non-standard layout. Start up the console by turning on one of the guitar controllers and see what happens.

Best answer: Yes, the game is seeing the guitar peripherals as standard 360 controllers. If the controller is not sending out a signal/code that the game recognizes, then the game assumes you're trying to play karaoke with a standard controller with a headset or mic.

What brand and model are the guitars? Is the guitar listed on the Guitar Hero Compatibility chart?
