Mattel Monster Mystery

Can anyone name these plastic snap-together creatures made by Mattel in 1996?
I purchased a large lot of these toys recently. There are 8 types of creature, along with a variety of connectors. Most are marked "©1996 Mattel Inc." I've found a few of them for sale online, but no one seems to know what the toys were called.
Anyone recognize them?

Ha! I was JUST NOW coming back in to say that after further googling, it looks like the monsters were part of a McDonald's promotion. Yay, teamwork!
p.s. Also, now I'm sad that I stopped eating at McDonald's so young, because those toys are awesome. I loved the original Tangle I had.

Response by poster: It seems that they were sold independently from the promotion as well.

Tangles! I have a *big* shoebox full of Tangle bits. We started with a few from McDonald's, but my kids liked them so much that I bought a couple of big sets. And a set with extending (accordioning) bits (although those weren't quite as sturdy as the rest). I remember one big extended family party where a few of the grownups spent the evening putting together an entire menagerie of critters for the kids to play with in the morning.
