What did I hear?

Scifi-ish instrumental music played at a chain bookstore?

Several years ago (5-ish) , I heard an album at the local Borders books. Being... well, me, I failed to get info on it. What I recall of it: Probably all instrumental. Sorta soft, moody, haunting, but not terribly creepy. I'm 96% sure its not John Murphy, though he is the closet I've found so far. Long shot, yes... but worst case I find cool new music :) Thanks guys.

That could literally be anything. Can you narrow it down somewhat?

Is it movie soundtrack music? What instruments? Guitars, drums? Orchestral? Electronic?

If I were just going to go with something that you is almost but not quite John Murphy, though, I would guess something by Clint Mansell. Maybe The Fountain soundtrack?

Max Richter? I first heard his stuff as a interstitial on RadioLab, not at Borders - the song I linked, Vladimir's Blues, is from The Blue Notebooks, released in 2004, so around the right time.

The soft, moody music I did hear at Borders 3+ years ago was Mikal Blue, but he's a pop singer, so it's probably not him.

Bear McCreary's Battlestar Galactica compositions? Clint Mansell? Jerry Goldsmith's Alien soundtrack?

Response by poster: Probably all electronic/synthetic. Nothing really stood out to me as 'oh, that's guitar' or 'piano' It could very well be Clint Mansell... Not the fountain soundtrack, but I'll keep digging into his stuff. (Death is the road to awe sounds quite similar)

More ideas are appreciated, but I think my best best so far is to dig into Clint Mansell's works. I know this one is tricky, but Mefi, like friendship, is magic.

Could it have been God is an Astronaut?
My other baseless guesses would be Mark Snow, Mike Oldfield or Tangerine Dream.

Bluemars is an excellent webstream for ambient scifi-ish music. They have a list of artists.
