where to travel south of the united states

Hello We are thinking of taking a vacation from Sept 2nd to the 11th somewhere south of the united states (no Mexico/Puerto Rico as we just visited these places) What countries/cities/towns would you all suggest? We are considering weather (including hurricanes), travel time (less is better) from the NW U.S., and looking for an experience that is different from home. We are thinking of Belize as a possibility but nothing is definite. In the past we have driven across puerto rico and went by (local) bus down the yucatan peninsula. We enjoyed those. We are not interested in going there again but this gives some idea of the kind of travel we enjoy.

Costa Rica has an excellent tourist infrastructure, and is easily drivable.

I'm going to second Costa Rica. It's beautiful and it has no army, so you'll be supporting the cause of peace. The only major downside is that the food is boring and not very good.

Belize is awesome and is just starting to get tourist traffic...therefore it's cheaper and less on the beaten track. Plus lots of relatively undisturbed rainforest.

My friends have loved Costa Rica though.

Response by poster: Thanks. We were thinking of costa rica originally but had taken it off the "short list" because of hurricane season. Are we over-worrying?

Hurricanes don't usually get that far south. Also, you'll want to be on the Pacific side which would even have fewer hurricanes.

Belize, being just south of the Yucatan would be more prone to hurricanes.
