Can I use my ipod touch for sms while living in the Netherlands?
So, I think I've rigged my ipod touch to serve as a phone to my friends and relatives in the U.S. (securing a US phone number using talktone and google voice.) My question is, can I also use it to text and call dutch phones? I do plan on getting a mobile phone once I arrive, but know that I'll probably be getting the cheapest plan possible. Is it reasonable to expect that I can figure out how to stretch my plan by using the touch for sms? Thanks for your help, I'm a technomoron.

Best answer: You can also use Google Voice to do SMS directly from the iPod using your GV number. To use Skype I think you need a paid Skype account if you want to make calls to/from real phones.

I don't think you'll be able to text Dutch numbers from Google Voice. I've had very very spotty experience with receiving non-US (even Puerto Rican) text messages on my GV number.

Response by poster: Ah, thank's polexa. I guess the jury's still out so I'll just see how it plays out.
