Help me remember this PBS show from my childhood!

Help me remember the name of this PBS Kid's show from the 80s: There's a lady, she's being held captive by someone (a witch?), and she passes the time by reading stories that she literally cranks out of a story machine to children.
I don't know if the show was actually from the 80s, or if I was just re-run in the 80s.
When the story was cranked out of the story machine, it would make a noise similar to the "I'm working" sound that many modern voice-prompt telephone systems make when they're processing what you've just said.
