Getting medicinal marijuana in LA?

Drug Filter: Is it legal/feasible to get a prescription for medicinal marijuana in California while just there for a brief business trip for a couple days?

Posting for a friend.

Someone will be in LA (Santa Monica near Venice Beach) for a couple days in the near future and is wondering whether they are able to obtain a card for medicinal marijuana and smoke it while there legally (questions about legit medical issues aside, so please don't focus on the ethics of that).

From my time there, I recall there are a lot of places that would probably offer him a prescription off the street on Venice Beach from when I was last there, but I don't do this sort of thing so have no clue.

The second part of this is, if he were to obtain one, and is just staying in a hotel, where could he go to smoke this? Could he go to the place that sold it to him? What other options exist to consume it legally? Edibles are of course an option.

And lastly, if he were to eat edibles on his last day before going to the airport, would he be in any trouble as long as he had nothing on him? Not sure if dogs would smell that kind of thing.

You have to have a valid state ID or proof of residence before you can obtain a letter of recommendation ("prescription") from a qualified doctor in CA. So your friend might be SOL when it comes to legally obtaining marijuana in LA. In any case...

The second part of this is, if he were to obtain one, and is just staying in a hotel, where could he go to smoke this?
His hotel room would be the best spot. Marijuana smoke isn't like cigarette smoke what leaves tar everywhere and the smell stays forever. It goes away pretty quickly. Barring that he could go sit out near the water on a more deserted stretch of beach (granted, hard to come by in the Venice area) and smoke discreetly. In fact, while public consumption is illegal in CA, it's not uncommon to see/smell someone smoking marijuana in relatively public yet out-of-the-way area. No parks, playgrounds, school yards, etc. Keep it away from the kids, and for the most part adults won't bother. This is not legal advice, obviously. I am nobody to take any kind of advice from in this regard.

Could he go to the place that sold it to him?
Probably not. I have yet to visit a dispensary that offers a consumption area on-site.

What other options exist to consume it legally? Edibles are of course an option.
You can eat it, smoke it, or vaporize it (and inhale the vapors). There are, of course, myriad variations within those three choices. If you mean, What other options exist for places to consume it? The answer is basically 'none'. There aren't any cannabis clubs or other public spaces I'm aware of that allow consumption. Medical marijuana is dispensed with the instruction to consume the prescription privately.

And lastly, if he were to eat edibles on his last day before going to the airport, would he be in any trouble as long as he had nothing on him? Not sure if dogs would smell that kind of thing.
I can't tell you for sure what will or won't happen, but I can't forsee an issue with consuming an edible dose and then flying. People get on planes fucked up all the time; it's more of a matter of how one acts.

I was recently on Venice Beach. There are shops every few feet advertising that "the doctor is IN!!!!!!" or some such -- i.e. advertising that they will give you a prescription, and presumably fill it.

Response by poster: Thanks for the answers so far. Anybody have any specific experience or knowledge of the Venice Beach doctors?

NOT A RECOMMENDED COUSRE OF ACTION, but plausible:

Oh hey, the obvious workaround for the CA state ID thing is to just go to either side of any of the Venice Beach doctors, look for a man in a cap who's mumbling, and get yourself a fake made.

kestrel251: advertising that they will give you a prescription, and presumably fill it.

This is not the case as the doctors can only prescribe medication and are forbade from dispensation. You could probably go next door to a headshop/collective and get it filled, but both prescription and fulfillment can't be done under one roof.

For further information on where you can smoke and basically everything else there is to know about marijuana in California, I recommend checking out the CA NORML website.

Medical cannabis access is only legal for California residents with a doctor's recommendation. Here is information from Americans for Safe Access. Whether your friend can get a recommendation is a different question.
