Help with San Francisco lodging

I am helping to plan a trip to San Francisco in September for a doctor from Kenya, for a conference. All the cheaper hotel rooms bought in a block by the conference organizers are taken. Where can he stay relatively cheaply that's not too far from (or too complicated to travel to) the Moscone Center?
Best answer: I am a huge fan of hotels.com for this kind of conundrum. You can define your price range, distance from major landmarks (Moscone Center is listed there as a landmark in SF), among other criteria. It's kind of hard to see, but they'll also map your search results--click the Show Map link in the upper right corner of the search results window.
It's hard to know what you consider relatively cheap; most downtown hotels are fairly pricey, although there are a few in the dodgy areas in the $100-$150/night range. Avoid 6th Street--it's sketchy 24/7, but especially so at night.

Response by poster: I don't know anything about San Francisco, but a hotel in the $100-150 range sounds pretty inexpensive according to what I know. (It's definitely better than the $269/night hotel rooms that are left in the conference block.) Thanks for the tips about hotels.com and 6th Street!

Best answer: The Grant Hotel, 753 Bush Street, is inexpensive and nearby.

Best answer: Check the Good Hotel on Mission at 9th. An easy walk to Moscone.

Best answer: You could check out The Mosser, stayed there a few years ago and it was good value and very close to the Moscone Center.

Response by poster: These are all really helpful suggestions. Looks like hotels.com has places under $100 within 2 miles of the Moscone Center, which is way better than I expected. Thanks, everybody and especially smirkette, for making me look good to my boss!
