The e-mail came from…inside the house!

Weird Google Groups and/or Gmail issue. I sent a message to a Google-hosted mailing list I am on, from a Google Apps e-mail address, and received a couple of unlikely e-mails in response…from myself.

I immediately received the text of my original message, sent from me, to me (same address, a domain name where I have the e-mail hosted by Google Apps). This has never happened before. I never receive my outgoing message back when sent to any e-mail list using this address.

I received some normal responses to my original message via the mailing list, so I know it went through OK.

Later, I received the following message—also from myself, to myself at the same address Re the same subject line:
I am currently driving and am unable to take your message.Email sent by Text'nDrive App for iPhone,BlackBerry and Android. Listen to your emails and reply by voice. No typing just speak! Drive Safely today download the app for free at www.textndrive.com
Searching the web for the above message results in a lot of hits, but just the message itself—not people talking about the message. I had never heard of textndrive before, or visited their website, so I'm really curious about how I got this message.

Other relevant details: I usually check my e-mail through POP using Apple's Mail.app. When I go into the Gmail web interface, I see the above message twice (the two sent about 4 hours apart), but only received it via POP the first time. Google Groups and Google App accounts are going through some kind of transition, and I recently updated both.

This seems to be a relatively recent change (within 12 months ago), but I didn't used to get an email in my inbox "from" me when I posted to a YahooGroup mailing list, but now I do. So maybe it's a change like that which has for some reason only taken effect on your account just now.

As for the textndrive thing, are you sure you've never installed that app on your phone? Could be the response is actually from someone else on the mailing list who has the app installed, and the "From" has got messed up somehow due to it replying to a mailing list email.
