Seven cities in one!

Find my friend's book (by plot): Explorer describes seven(-ish) cities he visited... but in the end, it turns out they were all different descriptions of the same city.

That was my thought too, yak!, it sounds very Calvino-like, but I don't think the description quite matches Invisible Cities, or any other books by him I can think of.
