Official translations involving Ukrainian, Czech and maybe English? In Los Angeles?

Translation services: How do I get a Ukrainian birth certificate officially translated into Czech(!) in Los Angeles? (Plan B: Get it officially translated into English, and then have the Czech embassy officially translate THAT into Czech)
Someone working at the Czech consulate of Los Angeles has offered to take care of the rest (I'm sure for some money!) if I can get her this birth certificate with an official English translation. But what IS an official English translation? Do I need a notary who speaks Ukrainian? How do I find such a person? Can I do this online, or does this need to be done in person?

First, ask the person at the Czech consulate what she considers an "official" translation, just to be certain. After that, try these guys. You might have to pay double, but the rates there could be useful as a guide for how much you want to "tip" the consular worker to help.

You can do this online, yes. I work for translation agencies in the US and we do get to translate birth and marriage certificates too. The agency sends translators the scanned documents. Translators have to keep the same layout and formatting as much as possible. The agency then takes care of getting the translation certified.
Agencies can cost you more money than getting a translator to do this for you directly so try that too. You can go to the job section on the main translation portals - proz.com and translatorscafe.com - and post a request there for Ukrainian to English translation of a birth certificate. Specify the translator needs to be certified in the States. Or, for more instant screening, you can use the Translators Search from the American Translators Association - it has quite a few matches for Ukrainian to English with specialisation in law. These are the matches for translation companies in that combination and specialisation.

Response by poster: OK, I got off the phone with the lady at the consulate again. She says she's not sure, but that it would probably be best to give them a notarized and certified translation from Ukrainian to English.
