Help me find an old cop drama

Can you help me find the name of an old cop show? It was on for two or three seasons in the 80's.
I can't remember too much about this, it was an ensemble cast, I think it took place in the South or West, and at the end of the last season the cliffhanger was the token black cop left in a coma. The show wasn't picked up for the next year. The lead in the show was somebody kinda famous, but his name escapes me.

Actually, that was on for a number of years. So it doesn't work.
