Many hardware stores carry these in San Francisco. We got ours at Cole Hardware. Try calling some local hardware stores: they may well have them.

Any bait shop. I got some at Park Bait Co. on Montrose Harbor.

Please don't! They're an introduced species which have on many occasions escaped their vermicomposting vessels and now pose a significant invasive threat to native earthworm populations (source). Consider enlisting local worms instead.

That link could not be less helpful, and is only tangentially topical. My bad. This is a good summary page.

Response by poster: I don't think that worms escaping my downtown highrise balcony to currently pristine woodlands is a significant threat.

I followed the link alexandermatheson posted, and learned that red wigglers aren't great at composting. There's an Ask.Me style link where people ask experts local to your area questions about worms here. The link suggested talking to your local university extension (see the link I posted) to find out what kind of worms work for composting in your area, and I bet they would know exactly where you could find them.

Best answer: I found this link to the Windy City Worms. In my town they have worms for sale at the environmental shop and organic farmers market. And if you want a DIY bin, the OSCR JR. works great.
