3 Boxes o' Mystery

Brooklynfilter: What are these red-and-white boxes on the corner of Smith and Union Streets?

There are three of these things sitting next to a tent, also red and white, at what I think is 315 Smith Street. You can see them clearly in Google Maps' street view. Storage containers for whatever is sold in the tent, or something more... sinister? (These are the only two options).

not sinister; I do think it does have to do with the artists' fairs they have in the tents on weekends. You should go one weekend; they have cool stuff.

Yep, probably. They seem connected to the Brooklyn Indie Market, though Yelp says it's closed.

From its FAQ:
What is the address?
The big red and white tent on Smith street between President and Union street, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. F/G train Carroll Street Station stop.
This blog post (from 2007) says:
One more weekend until the Brooklyn Indie Market opens on Smith Street at Union in Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. We walked by there the other day and saw the old red and white stalls that were put up for book vendors ages ago.

They remind me of The Strand kiosk on 5th Ave. and 60th street, right at the southeastern corner of Central Park. Google Street View.

I used to live near there and remember it being around as late as 2009; not sure about last year though. At any rate: nothing Area 51-ish or Big Brotherish about the boxes.

Best answer: They're closed - from the homepage on JC's link above:

After four sumptuous years at Smith and Union Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Indie Market will not reopen at this location but has evolved into an event/wedding coordination and styling company, Clementine Events.

But yes, those boxes are where they stored 'stuff' for the market. And clown parts.
