Disappearing Files

Is iTunesU supposed to act like this (ie: auto-delete after a single play)?
I use iTunes software. I don't use any iTunes device; just listen/watch'em off the laptop. I have the latest version installed. I have made very few configuration changes, relying on the generic defaults.
I recently started downloading stuff for the iTunesU. Problem is: Once I listen to something, it disappears. Oh, the file is still in the folder, iTunes just won't show it to me. Pretty annoying.
Is this the way it's set up? Some bizarre teaching strategy to make you REALLY pay attention? Maybe some copyright issue that demands they autodelete after a single play?
I'm gonna assume it's another Apple bug -- yet I can't seem to find anyone else online affected by it.

Response by poster: I'll go through it again, see if I missed anything. What do you mean by "refresh the videos"?

It's a video podcast. There is code in iTunes to automate handling podcast subscriptions differently from regular video and audio files. See artlung's comment on how to handle it.

I use iTunesU regularly and it never removes files. I've never messed with the settings.

Response by poster: Well, it's still doing it -- regardless of the tweaks I try. Since it isn't doing this to the regular podcasts/music/audio books, etc, I'm just gonna delete the iTunesU stuff until they iron out the bugs.

Click the iTunes U link in the left hand navigation, no matter what the view (song list, album list, grid, cover flow) you should have a link at the bottom right that is labeled "Refresh"
In my experience that works just like Podcasts do, it will then check for new episodes for your subscribed iTunes U, and begin downloading if there are new ones.
I've not experienced what you describe myself. I'm wondering if you have iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized checked. If unchecked, I've had iTunes "lose track" of files in the way you describe -- for music not podcasts or iTunes U, but it's worth a shot.
You could try things like restarting, and reinstalling iTunes. I would encourage you to back up your machine, your iTunes Library, etc before doing that though.

Response by poster: Curiously, if I create a "smart folder" for them, they remain visible there. Something is wonky in the configuration. The problem is -- I never really configured anything.

above are dropdown boxes. It sounds to me like one of those settings might be funky? Maybe try to change the settings, refresh the videos, and change to the correct settings?
