Beauty without animal cruelty

What cosmetic brands would you recommend to someone who is trying to choose products developed without animal testing? I've methodically flipped over the back of packaging at major supermarket and pharmacy chains when hunting for mascara, for example, with no joy. Ordering products that need shipping would be problematic since it's already 90+ F (32+ C) where I live during the day. Suggestions much appreciated.

Here is PETA's list of cruelty free cosmetics companies - it also notes when the company is vegan.

Is there an Ulta near you? I believe Urban Decay is cruelty-free and Ulta carries their products.

If the stores you go to have an organics section (mostly food) it may also have "natural" products which are likely not tested on animals. Boots is only carried by Target in the U.S. as far as I know. They don't test on animals.

Are we talking makeup, or all toiletries?

Makeup, check out Everyday Minerals. Works beautifully, cheap and vegan.

Can you find Revlon where you are? They don't test on animals.

For things that are like soap and moisturizers, we shop at Lush.

Avon is listed as a cruelty-free company on PETA's site. And, Avon has the added bonus of having very affordable products, great seasonal sales, and fun little catalogs. You might even get lucky and find a sales rep who is generous with the free samples.

When my daughter first moved to her own apartment, her landlord's wife was an Avon Lady who loved handing out free stuff. I don't think my daughter paid for makeup or deodorant or any other personal care items the entire time she lived there!

Looking at the list on the PETA site, tons of upscale makeup companies are cruelty-free. Tarte and MAC are two I see, as well as the aforementioned Urban Decay. Go to a department store, ULTA or Sephora and you should find plenty of options- they'll probably be more expensive than the drugstore, though.

Hmm, if you're actually in Woodway, TX, it looks like the Richland Mall near you has a Dillard's, which carries MAC, and a JCPenney, which usually have mini-Sephoras inside them.

MAC, Stila, Tarte, Urban Decay and Physician's Formula all make great products, and they're on the PETA list for brands that do not test on animals. That doesn't necessarily mean they are vegan though - they may still contain lanolin, my personal bete noir.

I use Origins. You can find them at pretty much any mall or Macy's.

Check out Beautypedia.com/Tested on Animals. There's a list of all the manufacturers of animal-free testing. It's also a fabulous resource for getting real, honest reviews of cosmetics.

Avon doesn't test on animals! It was mentioned up above, but their makeup is awesome. I use their mineral line and have not been disappointed.

Urban Decay don't test, and have some vegan specific products. The Body Shop are an iffy one - they're owned by L'oreal, who certainly do carry out animal testing, but their own products are not animal tested. Boots do a wide range of different products too.

Naked also do cruelty-free shower gel/moisturiser/shampoo, and are reasonably priced, but not sure you can get them in the US. If someone can recommend a non-tested hairdye that isn't henna, I'd be interested :)
