Flying into Miami tomorrow evening, will this government shutdown affect me?

My wife and I are flying into Miami tomorrow evening from Toronto. No urgent busines or anything, just getting away from "spring" here and bumming around Miami Beach for a week.

Apparently you folks are about to experience a government shutdown. Will it affect us? I have no idea what direct impact the Federal government has on day to day life in the US, so I'm not really sure how much (or if) this will change our holiday. Like I said, we'll just be hanging out on the beach, walking around Ocean Drive etc

Best answer: No. Unless you are heading to a National Park, there will be no impact on you. My understanding is that TSA employees will still be working, so your airport experience will be the carefree, pleasant lark it always is.

"Essential" services will continue. I assume that will include air traffic control.

If you go to any national parks, they will be closed. As a tourist, that's the only thing I can imagine affecting you. All government services that are for the protection of life or property will go on without interruption, so you don't need to worry about air traffic control being suspended. Most other services that you'd be using will from state or local governments, which won't be shutting down.

Here is an article that more clearly details what is shut down if you're interested.

The only thing you have to worry about: a city-wide poetry festival in effect, so look out!

When the government did a similar shutdown in the '90s, I would not have known about it except for the incessant fear-mongering of the media.

O! Miami!
Oh don't you cry for me!
For I come from southern Florida
and poetry doesn't rhyme anymore
so whatever.

RJ Reynolds, I was prepared to hate that website on first impression, but it's really rather cunningly designed. Absolutely no navigational cues, but it generally does what you meant it to do.

Eliza Bishop, poet, scares me a little with her portrait.
