Usenet stories about a wandering adventurer and his number 9 headbag?

Many years ago, at the dawn of the internet, I encountered a series of stories, in a Usenet group, about a wandering adventurer and his number 9 headbag. I may have all of these details wrong.

My memory is that they were a series of short tales about an adventurer and possibly his companion. I have an impression that the stories had a Don Quixote feel about them, or perhaps a 'buddhist gunslinger' feel. From memory the adventures took place in a desert area. And each of the tales ended with the antagonist being subjected to a number 9 (or five? or a different number?) headbag, after which he or she would abruptly be enlightened. It's possible that these stories were a sort of 'in-joke' in the Usenet group in which they appeared.

I'd be happy if someone else simply remembered these stories; I'd be thrilled if someone remembers them in more details and / or if anyone knows if they've been archived anywhere.

Google groups is the usenet archive and it's searchable. I think that it goes back to the dawn of the usenet but not 100% sure on this.

It definitely doesn't go back to the earliest days of Usenet. As far as I know, all that data has been lost.

Response by poster: My experience is that Google Groups doesn't go back that far, either. Something went awry when Google bought the DejaNews archives. Certainly, no combinations of keywords I can think of turns up these posts.
