Help! VPN stops broadband connection working
Hi!
I have installed Nortel VPN to access remote files belonging to a client (I'm a freelancer).
The trouble is, when I'm connected to the VPN, my broadband connection doesn't work.
Apparently the problem is caused by my router, which is a BT HomeHub (I'm in the UK). I phoned their tech helpline and they said there was no way both could be accessed at the same time. However a quick google suggests it's only BT (spit) which presents this kind of problem which leads me to think there may be a way to get round it.
If anyone could help I would be forever grateful!
Thanks in advance!

When you say the broadband doesn't work, do you mean that you can still access the remote client files, but no longer browse the web?
If so, this isn't unusual. Our VPN settings, for example, are configured to block the user from accessing other internet resources while connected to our network as a security measure.

As the others have said, this is part of the VPN configuration, often called "split tunneling". As the remote company is permitting you to access their internal network it's often in their best interests to disconnect you from any other networks you may be connected to (in this case, the internet) to prevent your computer from bridging those networks, exposing their network to additional risk.
Solution: two computers.

I remember working with people using Windows who had this problem, and there's a checkbox somewhere that allows other non-VPN traffic to pass. I wish it wasn't as vague as that.
On OSX, there's a setting in the VPN advanced settings to "Send all traffic over VPN connection," which you'd want to uncheck to pass other traffic.

Response by poster: Thanks guys. Am still trying! Wish I had two computers :-)
jardinier, I can't access the files because they are sourced via an https: link, unfortunately.

Are you using windows? If so, you just need to uncheck the "use remote gateway" button.
