Broken Desire HD, fixable?

HTC Desire HD. Phone appears to be working perfectly, except it isn't responding to touch.

I haven't dropped it or knocked it, it just stopped working. I've tried all the obvious stuff - yank the battery, factory reset, banging it on the desk in frustration, not a flicker.

So, two-part question.

1) Is there anything else I should try before it gets packed off to the operator?

2) How common is it for a touchscreen to fail?

Response by poster: Follow-up: The phone went back to 3, who turned it around in a day. I'd still be curious if anyone has any data on touchscreen failure rates.
