distorting dangerous into cool

I am interested in finding psychology and sociology material on a character set: Sonny Berger, Huey Newton, Jack Tatum.

I am composing a character sketch for a young male in Oakland CA c. 1979 whose world view has an overlap between the concepts of dangerous and cool. More general documentation could also be useful, but I am most keen to find material specific to the East Bay in the 1970's. Popular material such as film is OK but I really want to know about peer-reviewed academic work.

Thank you!

Well, there is, of course, Hunter Thompson's Hells Angels. It's quite a bit more journalism-y than you might imagine.
