Because I'm sure they'll all be staring at my toes.

Black tie wedding tomorrow. Thanks to my last AskMeFi, now have (rented) long black dress, silver open toe sandals, black seqin wrap, glittery silver necklace and bracelet, and handsome Bear husband escort in appropriate (rented) tuxedo . . . and only now I realize I'd better get a pedicure. But I have no idea what color my toes should be. So, toe-nail-polish-wearing hivemind, can you please tell me what color polish I should get for this outfit?

Best answer: Anything in the nude/pink/tan family (my go-to at the salon is Essie Adore-A-Ball).

I'd do bright purple, but that's just me. Clear, something muted like (very) light pink, or french tip would probably be the most appropriate choice for keeping the toes out of the spotlight.

Best answer: Silver or dark red would look good.

Best answer: If you will be wearing open toe shoes a lot post-wedding, but not maintaining the pedicure, go for nude or very muted, as above. If you mostly wear closed toe shoes, and/or go regularly for a pedicure, live it up and go for red. Dark red for classy, fire engine red to be more eye-catching.

Yeah, I think you can basically pick whatever you like in this situation, as long as your remember it's black tie (i.e. no neon green). Do you want people to look at your toes? Are they your fun small accessory, or just there? Pick accordingly.

Best answer: I usually like a pale pearly nude and I think that would be good for that outfit. Spa Scott is a nice place to get it done.

That should say "Scotta". Stupid autocorrect.

If you want something out of the ordinary, have them do a french tip in silver ;)

Best answer: French tip is always simple and classy. If you want some color, I'd go for a dark red or a plum.
posted by zombiehoohaa at 11:40 PM on March 18, 2011

Best answer: If it was me, I'd go with a deep, shimmery orange. But then, when I have color options for anything, I usually go with deep, shimmery orange. Other than that, you can't go wrong with a vampy, garnet red. It's a classic for a reason.

match it to your lipstick, of course!

Best answer: I would really avoid a french tip pedicure. I've never heard of that being considered classy. Maybe it is a regional thing, but not universal at all. I agree with the nude-ish/pink-ish suggestions.

I should say that I generally advocate for the craziest option available, but you seem to be looking for the classy/classic option. If I am wrong about that, go for bright red, or whatever else you gravitate toward!
posted by asimplemouse at 11:55 PM on March 18, 2011

Best answer: Whatever matches the skintone of your feet best. Ask the pedicurist for recommendations. (I'd personally go a rich royal purple or as mostlymartha suggests, a vampy red. Both are strong, classy, elegant colours.)

I would humbly suggest that a pale pink or nude colour would look slightly washed-out against such a dramatic outfit.

PS: have fun!

Best answer: Black tie? Nude and match your finger nails. No French tip.

I Am Not A Cosmetologist But I Once Owned A Nail Salon...

Maroon with a hint of iridescent overspray. They're fun to watch poke out from the blankets and wiggle.

Best answer: Boy here, so take this with a grain of salt, but nthing the suggestion of a dramatic red. OPI makes a shade called "I'm Not Really a Waitress" that is quite fetching and fairly easy to track down.

Best answer: Seconding OPIs "I'm not a really a waitress" - I wear that but now really like the new OPI "An Affair in Red Square" - very good with black.
posted by infini at 4:34 AM on March 19, 2011

Best answer: I'm a devotee of Essie Wicked. (Very dark red.) OPI I'm Not Really A Waitress is always good too, as others have said. And,

I would really avoid a french tip pedicure. I've never heard of that being considered classy.

This.

Nthing no french tip!!!

I agree that if you are going to maintain it, a bright classic color would be great. You can't go wrong, either, with a neutral.
posted by jgirl at 5:43 AM on March 19, 2011

Best answer: Also, if you're getting a pedicure, you might as well get a manicure at the same time, even if you skip color on your hands.
posted by jgirl at 5:45 AM on March 19, 2011

Agree NO French tip. Also, the color choice really depends on the general attractiveness of the piggies and toenails. Super cute? Pick a good red that goes with your skintone...Or maybe even a cool darker color. If your toes and/or toenails are kind of wonky then I'd go with something pink or nude that doesn't call specific attention to them.

Best answer: Any shade of nude, pink, red would be fine. Just pick what you like and go with it. Stay away from any greens, blues, yellows etc - you get the idea. I would definitely get my fingernails done too. A black tie affair calls for complete grooming!

Best answer: Silver or nude.

Nthing no French tip toenails. They always make me wonder what grodiness is lurking beneath the tips.

If you want to DIY and you want to go red, Nicole by OPI has a fantastic shiny ruby red out right now that can be found in drugstores. It's OMB! from the Justin Bieber line (yes, Justin Bieber has his own nail polish, but the color is so good that I don't care).

I'm Not Really a Waitress is excellent, too. OPI has a huge selection of shades and you'll be able to take your pick at the salon. Hawaiian Orchid is my go-to pinky-nude, and Lincoln Park After Dark is a good black-purple shade if you want to go that route, but really go with a shade that looks best with your skin.

Best answer: Nth no French tip. I love deep purple and deep classy red.

You can't go wrong with the classic Revlon Red. (Plus it's available at basically any drugstore or supermarket.) Above all things: NO FRENCH TIP. It's really, really declasse.
posted by BlahLaLa at 8:07 AM on March 19, 2011

Best answer: Cherry or blood red toes, nude, pale pink or clear fingers.
posted by thinkpiece at 8:47 AM on March 19, 2011

Nude or pale pink toes (nude if you're tan-ish, pink if you're pale) toes, considering all the glitter and silver going on. For sure classy. No french.
posted by sarelicar at 9:06 AM on March 19, 2011

Best answer: With black and silver, definitely a red! OPI Malaga Wine might be nice if you have cool-toned skin (I'd do a creme rather than a shimmer like INRAW or AAIRS mentioned above). And nthing others, no French-tip toenails, eek. Essie Limited Addiction is a terrific red, too, a good neutral red.

Best answer: Nthing no french tip. French tips make toenails look longer, and why would you want your toenails to look longer? I also agree with the person who said that in some regions, french tips are considered decidedly non-classy.

Nude, pale pink, or a dark color (dark colors are in style right now) would all be okay. I wouldn't worry too much about it, though. People will probably not be noticing that kind of thing.

Response by poster: My toes look peculiar in pale pink, as do my hands -- I think it is because my skin runs ivory with some sallow undertones. Looks like I am looking for a low key silver or dark red for toes, and a pale or nude but not pink manicure color.

My most sincere appreciation, all. This was incredibly helpful. Off now to get my polish on!

I am thirding "I'm Not Really a Waitress" -- that is my go to color for special occasion pedicures!

Response by poster: Here you go -- foot in silver sandal, with dark red polish, and hand with a shade of pale pink that actually worked well. Thanks again, all!
