NameThatSongFilter: Looking for a 90's song that used the horns from Soul Finger by the Bar-Kays
All I remember is it contained the horn portion of Soul Finger (YouTube link; relevant horns start just after 0:12) and probably some of the bass part as well. I would guess it was just an updated version of Soul Finger rather than a different song with a sample, but I'm not sure.
The rest of my memory is hazy: I think it had no words or yells, so it wasn't the original Soul Finger recording. It may have been a pump-up/entrance song for a pro sports team, but I have no idea which one it would have been.
Any ideas?

Best answer: Hmm. Not listed on either whosampled or the-breaks.
If memory serves, 'Soul Finger' was briefly George H.W. Bush's campaign song (the Lee Atwater effect, I imagine)--maybe there's a lead there.

Is there a chance you are remembering that G. E. Smith and the Saturday Night Live Band used to do this song for intros and outtros on 1990s SNL? That's something I clearly remember. I think there's more to that connection, because the Blues Brothers did medleys with Soul Finger in their regular shows, so it makes sense it would turn up as a motif on SNL.

Response by poster: ot the eighties' version by Dexys Midnight Runners
Hmm, that doesn't quite sound right either. But that bring up a pretty good *duh* moment - why aren't I looking for covers too? Thanks for the idea, back to Google.

I *think* I used to hear it in a Jr high / high school gym from time to time, not on TV. It's possible that it was the original recording, and the crappy sound system just muted some parts more than others.
