Weekend Zoot Suit: ENGAGE

My lady friend and I will be in DC this coming weekend (the 18th to 21st), which DC jazz club should we go to?

We both have been to DC often (and I lived there for a few years), so we know the Beltway relatively well. However, like many other DC young professionals, I was a workaholic and did not have much time to hit up the local music scene.

Are there any particular bands playing this weekend that I absolutely can not miss? This is mostly a social trip (to see friends) so places that are good for small groups (5-8 people) a bonus. As is DC proper or NoVA, we'd rather not trek into Maryland unless it is something extra special.

Easy Metro access obviously a bonus (but not necessary, we have transport, though I hate driving in DC).

Best answer: I'd recommend The Bohemian Caverns.

Damn I was going to recommend Hr-57 but the new location is not open yet I guess.

Columbia Station is pretty ok if you want to brave the scary adam's morgan crowds.

Do NOT go to Blues Alley in my opinion.

Best answer: Check out DC Jazz for listings. This weekend is the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, but that is in Maryland. Friday nights at Westminster are worth considering and are done by 9PM, so you can still make it somewhere else later. I agree with Potomac Avenue about the frustration that HR-57 hasn't opened yet...

Best answer: Twins - friendly, intimate club run by genuinely hospitable folks devoted to jazz. Friday and Saturday they're hosting the Lawrence Clark Quintet (myspace). It's a ten minute walk from the U St. / Cardozo Metro stop.

Clark is best known as a longtime sideman to Rashied Ali, but is also a talented leader.

Response by poster: Because of the weather (winds an brushfires closing parts of 95? goodness), we ended up stuck away from town Saturday night and spent the evening with friends in Virginia, but we had planned to head to Twins.
