Longshot filter - appliance part

How can I find this recently discontinued part for my GE Range hood?

I bought the GE Cafe Hood. It comes with a 30" standard grade, mesh, grease filter. I really, really wanted the optional heavy-duty commercial-style baffle-type filter, part JXBF30SS. Seen here.

I called GE parts customer service before purchase and installation, and they assured me I could get the part, and be happy. Now the hood is installed, and the part is discontinued. GE somewhat confusingly said the JXBF36SS (note the 36 designating 36" width) will work on the 30" hood, but it certainly did not. They shipped me one and I tried it.

How can I get this part? I have googled and binged and everything I can think of. I'll often find the part listed on some website, but they don't actually have the part; they order direct from GE when an order comes in, which obviously isn't working since GE themselves say they can't find any. GE claimed the part was recently discontinued due to poor sales, if that's at all relevant.

Help me, AskMeFi, you're my only hope.

It's hard to tell from that photo exactly how the part is constructed, but I'm wondering whether a metal shop could modify the larger part to fit.

I use RepairClinic for this sort of thing. They have forums over at Appliance411 where you can ask other people who may be more appliance focussed if you're still having trouble.
