How to segment the market for services by lawyers in a region?

Where can I find accessible market research on the American legal services market by practice area within certain markets, regions, states, or cities? In particular, have studies been done on the size of legal markets by city or region?

Would it be feasible to come up with a floor and ceiling for the market for legal services in any given city or region at one time? I know the ABA has a per capita listing of attorneys by state, and I've come across some studies by law professors of the legal services market. I've also seen studies on the overall American and British legal services markets performed by outsourcing or offshoring companies. I'm looking to see if there are any other ways information on the legal services market has been sliced and diced, and would it be possible to come up with an estimate of the range of the money paid for legal services in certain practice areas within certain regions? If not, what kinds of problems could you foresee in doing such a study? Any helpful links to this end?

I guess what I'm looking for is an analysis of the segmentation of the legal services market. Normally I can find anything, but I can't find this. What do you suggest?

Many thanks for wielding your magic!

Best answer: Go to the horse's mouth.

There is always someone in big national organisations who either does this for a living (actually collates the data you're looking for), or if they can't afford to buy it in, knows where it comes from. They will know the usual suspects who do market research in the legal field and, if they're willing to talk, can guide you on what might or might not be feasible.

You're looking for the person that owns the information somewhere like here (American Bar Association).
