The first 10 secs of Rufus Wainwright's "Poses" reminds me of another song, possibly a movie soundtrack. Help me identify it, please!

It vaguely reminds me of Thomas Newman's "Plastic bag theme" from the score of "American Beauty." (This is just a bit faster.)

Sounds a bit like the start of Wuthering Heights to me.

It reminds me a little of the very beginning of the excellent 2007 Persuasion.

For some reason it reminded me of John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy".

Reminds me of Citizen Cope, only not as fast.

Yeah, the whole American Beauty soundtrack has that sound for sure.

Response by poster: The "American Beauty" soundtrack seems to be the closest match so far, but I'm not quite sure if that's the one I'm thinking about... Thanks for the responses!

What a beautiful track. It reminds me a bit of the theme from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

I adore Rufus Wainwright, and "Poses" is among my favorite of his songs. He uses a huge number of cultural/operatic/pop/misc allusions in his music: he poached Pietro Mascagni for "Greek Song", and "Oh What a World" is basically Bolero: The Pop Song!

So it's not at unlikely that "Poses" is riffing off something specific that you're noticing. (I have no idea what if anything it is.) If it helps at all, here's one commentary he reportedly gave about "Poses":
"I was living in the Chelsea Hotel, and going out a lot, and sort of taking advantage of the modicum of fame that I'd gotten from my first record, and really trying to gather up experiences for the second. And this song sort of arrived at one point. It was about a combination—it was about certain people and certain—and about myself. It sort of became this character of a young guy who comes to the city, bright and fresh and young and smelling like roses, and leaves completely destroyed. I don't think that happened to me, but I saw it happen to a lot of people."

I know it's not all that similar musically, but the first thing that popped into my head was Passenger Seat, by Death Cab for Cutie.
