Your recommendations, please, for network visualization software that's available online for free (or for a small fee).

A friend wants to create a network visualization of the Ottoman power elite in the early 19th century. Can you help us find the right program for doing it?

I've seen this thread*, but the most useful link there is to a page that was last updated in late 2007.

*This question was asked by null terminated, which is awkward timing. Sorry.

GraphViz

You create a text file with your graph nodes and attributes (a DOT file), then GraphViz renders it.

Best answer: Gephi is fantastic and free. The community and documentation are also fantastic.

Tony Hirst of the Open University maintains an excellent blog with tons of Gephi examples and tutorials.

If you have Javascript experience you may want to look into the Javascript Infovis Toolkit.

I recently used it to create a network visualization of the Marvel universe.

Response by poster: Thanks all--my friend reckoned Gephi looked most promising, though he also liked the Marvel universe (thanks stungeye!).
