I'm certain that somewhere out there, at least one of you has already seen an advance screening or sneak preview of "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy." I have to admit that the trailers look good, although I'm going to see it with low expectations and hope to be pleasantly surprised. Anyone seen it and want to share an advance review?

You can always read this review, available in spoilery and non-spoilery flavors (I linked to the non-spoilery one). It was written by the same gentleman who wrote Douglas Adams' wonderful biography.

The short version: It sucks. Sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks, sucks. I'm still going to pay nine dollars to see it opening night, but I'm going to bring my thesaurus so I don't wear out the words "sucks" or "terrible".

The recent mefi thread on this also links to some less devastating reviews (& the last comment in there is positive) but, yeah, things don't look so good.

There's also this AICN review and this slightly spoiler-rich and hard-on-the-eyes review, both of which, while not glowing, are certainly far more positive than the MJ Simpson one.

I know you were looking for a Mefite's review, but since I can't help you with that, I'm trying to give the next best thing.

Plutor beat me to it.

And left me wondering: why reward the studios with buying opening weekend tickets, when dollar-run will let you see the thing and tell them "bad dog! No recovering costs on this stinker for you!"

weston: Basically, anticipation. I mean, good or bad, I'm going to see HHGTTG...but the huge batch of commercials get people to see it opening weekend. Plus, people tend to plan weekends around movies, a bit. So if I know a movie I want to see is opening this weekend, I'll schedule it in. It's stupid, but that's the way a lot of people do it.

(Of course, if it's a bad or mediocre movie *cough* Sahara *cough* that I only sort of want to see, it'll get relegated to the buck theater.)
