How do I challenge a severance package?

I'm being laid off in the new year. I have the option to challenge the severance package. How do I challenge it successfully?

I live in Canada and unfortunately I found out that I won't have a job in January. Work went over and above the rules for the province in laying me off. The severance equates to about two weeks of pay for ever year I worked there, which is seven years.

I have never been laid off before. I have the option to challenge it, but I don't know how. I had a niche job and I was paid about right according to salary surveys. What can, or should, I do?

What, if anything, do you forfeit if you mount an unsuccessful challenge?

Find a lawyer. Find out the cost for the lawyer and the size of the severance challenge. It might be worth it.

What does "work went over and above the rules for the province in laying me off" mean?

Yeah, usually "went over and above the rules" implies a good thing.

Wait, do you have the right to challenge the layoff or the severance package? These are two very different things. You should probably contact a mod to clear this up.

Two weeks for every year is the generally accepted standard in the US too. So if you got a fair severance package and the company is otherwise treating you fairly I'm not sure what are challenging? 14 weeks of severance seems like a gift. I got nothing when I was laid off at the end of November.
