I bought this bottle of rum at a flea market. It says Geseco bay rum on it. and at the bottom says the Goodman Chemical Co., Bush Terminal, Brooklyn NY. Is it worth anything? Is it safe to drink? Whats the history behind it? picture

Given that it says for external use only, I'd probably lean towards "not safe to drink" (but I have no idea why)

Response by poster: Huh, dunno why I didn't notice that before. But I assume because its rum I can drink it. Is there non-drinkable rum?

Best answer: It's not rum, it's bay rum aftershave. It was never intended to be drunk.

Well, for starters, bay rum isn't a drink. It's an aftershave.

Bay Rum seems to be a type of aftershave. I wouldn't drink it if I were you.

That's a bottle of aftershave.

It is not safe to drink. For reference, this is what "for external use only" on the bottle means.

Best answer: And if you're interested in Goodman Chemical, their address (in 1930) was 33 Sullivan in Brooklyn. Here it is on Google Maps.

Bay rum is actually a kind of tree that produces small berries that are used in the production of men's scents. Seriously. I saw them in Hawaii on a tour of a botanical garden. I crushed one in my fingers and smelled it. Bay rum is poisonous, by the way.
