MS Project alternative?

Free/cheap alternatives to Microsoft Project?

A friend of mine is working for a small startup with very little money. She's been using a trial install of Project Professional 2007, but she's about to run out of trial time, so she needs to either buy the full product (apparently very expensive) or switch to an alternative. What alternatives have you had good experience with (note: they have to be compatible with Project files)? If you know of any legal and cheap ways to buy MS Project, that also could be helpful.

I saw this question, which had one recommendation, but a) it's a few years old now and b) it'd be nice to have more suggestions.

I've been happy with the web based Zoho projects.

OpenProj is designed to be a freeware clone of MS Project. I used it for my coursework during a project management course last year - it worked like a champ, and my instructor and fellow students had no trouble viewing my saved project files in their copies of MSOffice.

Another vote for OpenProj. I've made light use of it with files generated in MS Project and I had no problems with it.
