Tips on using Garage Band to transcribe jazz solos, please!

Hi:

I am studying jazz improvisation, and am working on listening to the jazz greats and transcribing their solos. I've looked around at available software and it seems like Garageband '09 should fit the bill quite nicely, with some help in getting started.

I've figured out how to import a track from mp3. Now I just need to know how to select a few bars at a time and repeat that ad over and over, until I'm ready to move on to the next section.

Just now I found a nifty way to highlight an arbitrary segment in the top strip where the playhead and measure numbers are. I can highlight a segment - it gives me a nice yellow selection bar. Then I press the space bar and the playhead repeats that one segment over and over again -- perfect!

Sadly, this ability has just now disappeared. When I click and drag in that same area, nothing happens except the playhead repositions itself.

Where did it go? Did it just go into a different mode? (This is like using an oscilloscope to read Morse code!)

In summary, I don't actually need to edit anything - I just need to be able to select an arbitrary 5 to 20 second-long segment of the track and listen to that part over and over again, then mosey onward and repeat.

Thanks so much in advance!

I'm sure that you've changed something in your settings without noticing. I have no answer for that, other than browse around in your menus and try find it back.
To keep working on your transcriptions, however, you could copy a selection, and paste it into an empty "new song". After you're done transcribing that part, you can delete the whole thing to avoid clutter and just grab and paste the next selection.

Best answer: Down at the bottom where the play controls are, there's a button on the right that's the "cycle" button press it so it turns blue and you'll get the yellow cycle region bar at the top again.

It's in Garageband help under "Recording multiple takes".

Best answer: If you decide that you want a more specialized program for transcribing with features like changing tempo and pitch (and a beautiful user interface) then take a look at Capo. I've been using it for about a year and love it, although it is a bit pricey.

Response by poster: You guys are great! That's exactly what I needed. Just got Capo for my iPhone - look forward to trying it out.
