Help a Guy Get His Regular New World Music Fix

Can you help me find a replacement for the world music sampler my boyfriend used to receive with his Global Rhythm magazine each month?

My boyfriend used to subscribe to Global Rhythm magazine, which folded a while ago. He read the magazine, but especially liked receiving a new sampler CD in the mail each month with a variety of new world music and artists- African, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, whatever turned up.

They filled the rest of the subscription with a mostly unrelated magazine which he does not enjoy (the links on the website for a digital subscription lead to that magazine). What would be a suitable replacement? He would prefer a magazine with CD enclosure (or monthly audio sampler download), but is also interested in podcasts or any other suggestions that would fill the niche.

Songlines is a British-based world music magazine. A subscription to the US would cost $70 for 8 issues and $141 for 16 issues. Each issue has a cover CD. It also has a podcast.

World Passport is a pretty great podcast. It stopped updating for a while, but the backlog could keep you going for some time.

Mudd Up! hosted by DJ/Rupture might work. He's definitely filtering cumbia and world music through a hip-hop DJ's sensibilities, which may or may run parallel to your tastes. Regardless, he's got a new show up every week.

Awesome Tapes from Africa is pretty self explanatory and updates regularly.

PRI's The World has a daily(?) Global Hit segment that might fit. I think it's available in podcast form too.

BBC Radio has quite a few world music strands such as World Routes. The wonderful Andy Kershaw isn't working for the BBC at the moment but there are some archives and hopefully he'll be back next year.

Best if he has a dig around for podcasts of shows he finds appealing.

check our your local college or community radio station, or find one on the web. CIUT FM from toronto has a lot of world music programs, and most are available as podcasts or streaming.
