I have the absolutely extraordinary fortune to be going to see the Dresden Dolls this New Year's Eve. Help me find something beautiful and special to wear!

The gentleman friend and I will be ringing in 2011 at a Dresden Dolls show (and probably fancy dinner) and I am trying to figure out something glamorous and extraordinary to wear.

I have been poking around eBay and etsy and Google for a couple of weeks now, and would like to find something in the neighborhood of this (Dress 1) or this (Dress 2).

Dress 1 is beautiful but is also an awkward length for my height, and is perhaps a bit more demure than what I had in mind.

Dress 2 is cute but since it looks very much like a dress I had in college, I will feel ridiculous wearing it when I am in my thirties.

I love, love, love the sheer black overlay look...what is the search term I'm looking for? "Sheer black overlay" doesn't seem to pull up what I'm looking for on eBay.

I welcome your suggestions of search terms, brick-and-mortar stores in the Los Angeles area, websites, and sewing patterns. Comfort is not a concern. Price would be optimally kept under $200 at the most.

I think 1 looks gorgeous and elegant, perfect for a New Year's Eve (when people seem to go one of two directions: tacky or glamorous). Two really reminds me of being 19, cute, but more Saturday afternoon at Hot Topic than January 31st at a Dresen Dolls show.

Do you know about ModCloth? They are my go-to site for affordable dresses that are the perfect mix of fancy and fun. I'll do a quick browse and see if I find anything with the overlay look you're going for.

Okay, here are a few I found by searching "black dress" on ModCloth:
One
Two
Three
Four
And my favorite of the bunch: Five

Oh, and this one. You might also try searching for "black lace" or "black chiffon" as those seem to be the two things that are used for the overlay.

Sorry for the multiple comments. I love to shop vicariously when I'm broke :)

This is sexy and can be customized. If you wanted it longer, or with a different neckline, I'm sure she would work with you.

Lots on Bluefly and Shopbop. This is glam but kind of grown up and would definitely be the opposite of 'demure'! This is expensive but look at the back!

This isn't black lace, but it would be gorgeous at a Dresden show! And could definitely be worn again.

Maybe one of these black lace dresses?

Oh my goodness, I would jump at the chance to wear that Stilled Night dress barnone links to above.

Best answer: I'd take the first dress you linked to, and hike up the front so that it hangs in swags and is short enough to be above the knee. Then shorten the lining so that it doesn't hang below the outer layer - it could even be a bit shorter than the outer layer so as to show some extra leg. I thing the result would look sort of victorian/cancan dancer.

Frankly, I love the first dress you linked to. It's so elegant and different at the same time!

Response by poster: So many beautiful dresses! Even if I don't end up wearing one of them to the show, I'm excited to have so many new places to shop online. Thank you to everyone who commented...I'm still open to more suggestions!

I got a VERY similar dress to the first one on sale at Anthropologie.

I'm on the hunt now. Here's a dress pattern with the same type of shape, which uses a slightly sheer material over a slip-type thing.
