Can haz training?

I need recommendations on reputable first-aid or CPR classes in NYC. I'm looking for something that would work well for injuries caused by power tools, blunt force trauma or anything that could happen in a carpentry shop with adults.

Basic First Aid will only teach you to apply pressure, elevate the wounded area, and call 911. Tourniquets have been forbidden territory for a long time and even pressure points are not discussed much in the current course. You might be looking for a first responders or wilderness rescue course. But really, for a carpentry shop in a decently populated area, a call to 911, pressure, and elevation should be sufficient. (I am a First Aid/CPR Instructor, but not in NYC.)

What you want is a FR class. (First Responder.)

Probably not cheap, but head and shoulders above a regular first aid cert.

I teach woodworking in NYC (and have for 15 years). I decided becoming an EMT was the best route although at one time I was a First Responder (wilderness) and that is probably useful enough for the injuries you will encounter and far less time consuming than an EMT program. http://www.health.state.ny.us/nysdoh/ems/training.htm

Might want to check with local non-profit hospitals, they might have gotten a grant to teach these types of skills to the community.

I would also check with your local fire department or city hall to see if they offer a free first aid class through the Citizen Corps program, which was started after a significant event in NYC in 2001 by then-pres. Bush. It's a part of FEMA, but they offer a free CPR and Citizen Emergency Response Training in my local neck of the woods (Colorado).
