I did read the costume archives. Really.

Costumefilter: Costume ideas for this dress?

I don't usually do a costume for Halloween, but I was invited to a party this year, so I've got to come up with a costume. I have that dress from a recent wedding and was hoping to use it somehow. Someone who saw me in the dress suggested flapper, which could probably work with the appropriate accessories even though the dress silhouette isn't quite right. Or, you know, some kind of zombie. I need other ideas. Or heck, if nothing's going to work with the dress, throw some other ideas out there.

Is yours black lace? It seems like with a little accessorizing you could be an elegant witch, or a spider woman, or a very glamorous kittycat.

Response by poster: Oh, yea, the one I have is black lace with a black lining. The sash and brooch are removable.

The easy way would be to do what padraigin said and just get a witch hat or cat accessories.

You could also go as a Vampire. I just got done watching all of True Blood Season 3 in one go and for some reason that dress reminds me of Sophie Ann the Vampire Queen of Louisiana. You could just get all dolled up, maybe do really pale foundation and red lips, and go as the Vampire Queen of Wherever You Are.

I once wore my fanciest black dress with pearls, an understated updo and a pair of bee antenna on a headband.

I was a WASP.

Bride of Dracula, with a bridal black veil, spray painted coronet, really red lipstick.

Queen of Spades: make yourself a crown using the Queens of Spades from several packs of cards, make a belt with the Ace of Spades, use the Kings and Jacks at the hem and use the rest randomly on the dress (make sure that you can still sit).

You could just wear an elegant masquerade style mask, with some amazing accessories, and you would look great. I did something similar years ago.

well.

-Witch, of course.
-Gothic girl - add some black eyeliner, ripped fishnets, boots
-Maid - find a cheap white lacy apron and a feather duster, fishnets, heels
-Pirate - add an eye patch, a red bandanna, a bag of loot
-Black Cat - add some cat ears, tail and paint some whiskers on your face
-(dark) Faerie/elf - Buy some fairy wings, use body glitter.. maybe find some point ears
-Vampiress - teeth, pale face, maybe a drop of blood, fake long nails, etc
-Dead prom queen

Or maybe just wear those black and orange tights (Target has them for $5), orange hair clips, orange jelly bracelets - and just be dressed up for Halloween

Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs Lovett?

A zombie bride (with a prop to make it look like you ate your groom).

Paint yourself green (with body/face paint found at Wal*mart and some sort of sealant to keep it on and away from your furniture), get an appropriate mask and tail, and go as a city-terrorizing BrideZilla. Better yet, put a little padding under the front and claim you're going to have mini-Zilla babies. Attach Ken barbie parts to the bottom of one shoe/ claw foot to make it look like you stepped on someone.

You could get a "bride of frankenstein" style tall-hairdo wig, and make yourself up with pale skin/dark eyes. Sort of like what this costume is doing.

Best answer: Please, please, please do a Dio De Los Muertos theme. The lace is absolutely perfect for it. The makeup is fairly easy too. Grab a cheap rosary, some marigolds or roses to clip in your hair and maybe a black veil of sorts. It'll look fab.

striped tights, witchy shoes, black cape, witch hat. If you go for colored tights match your makeup to the tights. Green false lashes, etc.

Well, the dress says it's modeled after "times past" so I would totally play that up and be a movie star from the 40's or 50's. Put your hair up, get some pearls or nice jewelry, long gloves, sunglasses, get some pantyhose, draw lines up them:). Something like that, although, I also love the Dio De Los Muertos theme too.

I like the idea of a vampire/witch/queen of the night. Pale face, dark eyeshadow, red lipstick. A dribble of fake blood if you like. Done.

Just wear it, look gorgeous in it, and tell everyone you're a nudist in disguise.

I don't know why, but I am picturing a dark angel look, with really dramatic black/grey/silver make-up and some of those black Halloween angel wings made out of feathers.

Response by poster: Thanks everyone! I like the Day of the Dead suggestion. It's one I wouldn't have thought of myself, and it should be easy for me to put together.
