How do I learn the discipline of intelligence analysis?

What books do you recommend for learning more about the "how" of intelligence analysis?

Bonus points if you have more Google-fu than I and know of some open courseware that covers the topic.

Yes, this book is on Amazon, but I keep seeing it on people's bookshelves in various places. A surprising amount of analysis advice is a confused mess of popular science and organizational psychology.

I think Heuer's Psychology of Intelligence Analysis is the other must-read in this category. I think it is a bit more accessible than Structured Analytic Techniques but they are both great books.

Best answer: Lots of good intro material is available at the CIA'sCenter for the Study of Intelligence including Heuer's 'ok' book (sorry, ACH is a mess) which is available as a pdf.

Best answer: A half dozen or so I'd recommend about intelligence analysis:

- Richards Heuer - Psychology of Intelligence Analysis
- Richards Heuer - Structured Analytic Techniques for Intelligence Analysis
- James Major - Communicating With Intelligence: Writing and Briefing in the Intelligence and National Security Communities
- Clark - Intelligence Analysis: A Target-Centric Approach
- Roger George - Analyzing Intelligence: Origins, Obstacles, and Innovations
- Wayne Michael Hall - Intelligence Analysis: How to Think in Complex Environments
- Hank Prunckun - Handbook of Scientific Methods of Inquiry for Intelligence Analysis
- Morgan Jones - The Thinker's Toolkit: 14 Powerful Techniques for Problem Solving

I'd also recommend casting your net wider, and picking up some about understanding and building frameworks and theories:

- James Jaccard - Theory Construction and Model-Building Skills: A Practical Guide for Social Scientists
- Pamela Shoemaker - How to Build Social Science Theories
- Robert Weiss - Learning From Strangers: The Art and Method of Qualitative Interview Studies
- Lawrence Neuman - Social Research Methods: Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches
- Norman Denzin - The Landscape of Qualitative Research: Theories and Issues
