selling jewelry, specifically platinum

What is the best way to sell personal jewelry or metals? Specifically I have a platinum band that I've had for a few years and havent worn in ages that I'd like to part with. Is there a fixed value market for this similar to gold? How do you prevent getting a rotten deal from a reseller? Does anyone have personal experience with this? Really, what's the best way to go about doing this? Thanks as always for your responses.

I sold these guys some gold once. They were easy to work with. I'm sure there are other folks around who do the same thing.

New York Metals Exchange : Platinum. It's going for approximately $860 an ounce.

...but it should be mentioned that that is the flat, commodity price of platinum, and doesn't include any value added by the design or popularity of the beauty of the jewelry.

Response by poster: Thanks, both! Not to sound too stupid with this question, I wasn't able to figure that out (because I hadn't thought to) Appreciate it.

I guess the second question is how do you go about selling it? I find "jewelry buyers" in the phonebook. Is this where you go? Floydd's link is very helpful, but I'd assume it's better to handle things locally without mailing anything off.

I'm not anticipating any value added by design, as it's a straight band with no markings to suggest a designer or anything. It's just a band, valued for the metal itself.
