Who to go to for copying Civil War-era tintypes (L.A. area)?

I've inherited several tintypes of ancestors of mine from the mid 19th century. I would like to make copies of the images, but don't want to attempt this myself. Is there anyone you would recommend for this, preferably in greater L.A.?

To add to the challenge, some of the tintypes are more or less permanently encased in somewhat bulky little holders so that they probably wouldn't be suitable for scanning.

They actually scan really well, even in their cases.

A high end scanner will do it fine. I was tasked with this job when I worked at a professional photo lab. I'm sure there are many places that will be able to do this for you in L.A.

Two great color labs in LA are The Icon at Mid Wilshire, and ColorTek in Culver City.

Response by poster: I did actually try scanning one myself on a flatbed, but the results weren't good. I assume this was because the tintype couldn't lay right on top of the scanner glass, due to the case it was in.

Thanks, effluvia for the names of the color labs.

One other thought: The Getty has a great photography collection----and I bet the curator would be very interested in the plates. www.getty.edu
