Travelfilter: NYC, first weekend of October, where to go for Octoberfest?

My wife and I will be in NYC for the first time and want to experience something not too touristy. Along with the normal attractions we want to hang out somewhere cool for Octoberfest. We are both brew lovers and it seems to us that there has got to be something neat going on, it is NYC afterall.

Our only requirements are: not too expensive and not too formal.

How about Zum Schneider?

Zum Schneider is good, but small. Get there early.

If you're not afraid to make the trip out to Queens, the Bohemian Hall in Astoria is the best traditional beer garden in the city -- a block-wide backyard with booze, food, and usually music. It'll be packed but lots of fun the first weekend of October, as close to the real Octoberfest in Munich you're going to get.

Other bets in Manhattan -- Loreley and Lederhosen are, like the aforementioned Zum Schneider, good but small.

There's going to be a huge event at Governor's Island on the 9th. I don't know what prices are going to be like, but my friends and I are thinking of going, and we're hardly flush.

The beer garden around the corner from my apartment is having an Octoberfest event
, but it's this weekend - I'd guess most of the above mentioned spots are having some sort of special event, which may or may not be on the weekend in question.
