Serious FFVII glitch

I think I hit a serious glitch in Final Fantasy VII that would require me to restart from the very beginning. Help!

I'm playing Final Fantasy VII via my PS3. I think I've hit a serious glitch that would require me to restart my game from the very beginning.

I'm currently in Shinra HQ. I rescued Aeris, was captured and imprisoned, and then broke out after one of the test creatures attacked the guards. I investigated, and got up to Floor 68.

According to the walkthroughs I'm reading, I man I talked to was supposed to give me the keycard to the 68th floor. Instead, he only gave me some potions, and then he ran away. Without this keycard I am trapped on 67/68, because I cannot work the elevators.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any sort of hack to be able to fix this? Help!

You have to go down to floor 66 (wont say anything else to save spoilers)

(p.s. get into the elevators on the 66th floor)

Can you go down the stairs and get on the elevator on floor 66?

Whoops, should've previewed!

Response by poster: I can't get through the door to use the stairs down to 66 because I don't have the keycard for 67/68.

Response by poster: At least that's the only reason I can discern. For whatever reason, all the enemies are dead but the stairs are still blocked off.

Have you tried repeatedly talking to him? According to some of these guides, you have to do it a couple times before he gives you the keycard.

(Man, it's been a long time but I'm glad people are still playing FFVII)

Response by poster: He's not there anymore. If I recall, after I talked to him he ran off.

That's why I'm wondering whether there might exist any sort of cheat/hack that would allow me access to the stairs. I'm pretty sure the game glitched.

According to this page (scroll down or search for "keycard"), it looks like you're out of luck :(

I think you're fucked. I haven't played FFVII in a couple of years so please refresh my memory here - why do you have to restart the game? Isn't there a save point you can start from instead? I think I may need to play this again.

Response by poster: I saved after my game glitched up.

If all else fails you could try to dig up a virtual memory card save game to load. For example, GameFAQs has a non-cheating save at Gongaga. It's a bit further than Shinra HQ, but it's still on Disc 1.

That blows. I remember playing a ps1 game on my ps2 for days without saving, leaving the machine on b/c I didn't have a ps1 memory card that would allow me to save, only to have the power go out about a week into a game, losing all my progress. I never went back. Good luck finding a virtual memory card to load.

I am so sorry this happened to you. :( I encountered a glitch much later in the game and then had to play my brother's save which was three hours further than mine, and never got to play some of the biggest and most important plot points in the game. Ever since then, I have always used an absurd number of save slots per game that I'm playing.

Response by poster: Turns out it wasn't a glitch. Oops! On 68F, a hallway that I thought was blocked off to me in fact needed to be accessed from the first floor instead of from the mezzanine level. The stairs on 67F weren't intended to be accessed at all. Boy is my face red.
