Anyone know how I can create an .mp3 of the audio from a .mov video file on the same pc?

You should be able to extract the sound track of the Quicktime movie as AIFF using the Quicktime Player, then let iTunes convert it to MP3. (I'm assuming that the Windows versions of these tools have the same capabilities as the Mac versions.)

One way would be to use something like Audacity (simple, multiplatform, free) to record the playback. Then it's as simple as clicking the "Export to MP3" option.

IIRC you'll also need an MP3 encoder, such as LAME (more links)

Best answer: Drag the QuickTime movie into iTunes, then select it, and choose "Convert selection to MP3" from the advanced menu. The right click the MP3 file in iTunes and choose "Show Original File". There's your MP3.

(If it doesn't say "MP3" in the menu, change the conversion format in the preferences)

From your audio recording software, select `Stereo Mixer' as the source.

Play the video

Hit record.

Anything coming through your sound card will now be recorded. Don't do anyything else on the PC which may generate sounds, or they will be included.

I recommend DB Poweramp's auxiliary recorder function for this.

This is also a great way of recording streaming audio from online sources.

Response by poster: I couldn't extract within Quicktime because it was on a Windows PC, and I think you need Quicktime Pro to do any sort of editing, and it co$ts :(

I installed MPlayer with all the codecs, and while it played fine, it dumped the audio to some file I couldn't read it with anything because it was a Tivo audio file! (the source was a tv show.)

I have audacity, but couldn't get it to use the stereo mixer as input, although I didn't play around with it too long.

I never tried DB poweramp, but a good suggestion.

iTunes converted it perfectly. Thank you for all the answers.
