It's for grilling things between. Pop open the top, put them in, secure it, and you can flip as necessary. It might be for roasting corn. Is it open on the bottom?

Response by poster: It is not open on the bottom. Also, it has no identifying marks or labels besides a stamp for the welding shop or similar.

Best answer: That is a portable charcoal grill. If I'm not mistaken, if you take off the grill on top the two pieces of metal underneath it become legs for it to stand on. The two fold-out bits on that top grill are handles so you can lift it off the heat easily.

You're missing the lid, which would have a brand name and so forth on it.
