Ms Jabo and I are headed to Colorado for some car camping. Our route is from Pagosa Springs to Lake City to Lake Irwin Camp Ground (East of Crested Butte). Any car camping and/or scenic stop-over recommendations along the way will be greatly appreciated.

PS- We've been to Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Ridgeway a bunch. We are looking to explore the other side of the mt.s

Creede is a great little town.

Between Creede and Lake City, North Clear Creek falls make an awesome short pitstop. There are some campgrounds around there somewhere, but i don't know much about them. Going on towards Lake City, you can get some great pictures of the headwaters of the Rio Grande.

Our brakes were mushy and smelly by the time we got down off the pass into Lake City. LOw gear a good idea. There is a turnout before you get all the way down with spectacular views of lake san cristobal. There may be some camping around the lake. Lake City is surrounded by national forest and it is really beautiful.

Don't know when you are planning the trip but if you can make the Lake City Wine and Music Festival on 18 September it is very fun. In addition to great hiking, if you hurry, Lake City has some great trails for mushrooms (you can ask the local librarian and Mr Witty the library kitty for some especially good spots). Less than an hour away from Lake City is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and there is a ranger led boat trip through the canyon that I found beautiful and educational. And, of course, you should do a ride through Alpine Loop on an ATV or other 4-wheel drive vehicle.
